US-bound passengers face tougher security checks

January 5th, 2010

Tough new screening measures have been introduced for passengers flying into the US from 14 countries considered to pose a security risk.

Travellers from Nigeria, Pakistan, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Yemen and Cuba are among those who will face body pat-down searches and carry-on baggage checks under new laws introduced today.

It follows an alleged attempt to blow up a plane on Christmas Day.

As part of new guidelines, passengers from Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Saudi Arabia, and Somalia will also undergo enhanced screening.

However, passengers travelling from any other foreign country may also be checked at random.

Meanwhile, full-body scanners are also set to be introduced at Britain’s airports. It is believed the machines will be installed at London’s Heathrow Airport within weeks.
