Dwarka is a planned city and is associated to Lord Krishna. According to history it consisted of 6 organized sectors dealing with all the needs of the city. There were 700,000 palaces made of gold and silver stones and that sea harbor was at its finest at that time. But after Krishna left the earth, Dwarka submerged into the sea. The storm warning signal mast which was the latest equipment at that time was also installed at the station of the lighthouse.

July 15, 1962 was the date when Raj Bahadur, then Minister for Transport, Government of India, inaugurated the new lighthouse. It was constructed with RCC Baffle wall with vibrations and fog signals technology. These new equipments were supplied by M/s BBT of Paris, and were commissioned in April of 1964. It was in the year 1988 the fog signal service was eventually stopped.

May 11 1978 was the date when this Lighthouse of Dwarka took a Racon of Marconi origin. And it was on April 5, 1996, when the incandescent lamp was substituted to MH lamp and the direct drive was replaced to a stepper motor.

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga has interesting legend. There was a devotee of the temple, named Supriya who was attacked by a demon called Daaruka. Daaruka imprisoned the devotee and several others in his Daarukaavana. Lord Shiva appeared at the temple in the form of Jyotirlinga. Lord Shiva freed the prisoners and killed Daaruka.

The place took its name from the demon Daruka. According to legend, before Daaruka’s death, this demon appealed to the god that the place be named after him, now known as Nagnath.

This temple houses the idol of Shivalinga that faces towards the south. The idol of Gomugam housed inside the temple is positioned on the east portion. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga also houses the Giant statue of Lord Shiva which allures the devotees. This temple during the eve of Shivaratri turns to a place of festivities amidst a large number of devotees.

Another beautiful place in Dwarka to visit is the Sabha Mandapa there. Sabha Mandapa is a 12th century structure which has been the highlight of Dwarkadhish Temple.

Going to Mexico every year is one of the best ways to unwind. Going to the city of Cancun is even better. With all of the excursions available it can sometimes be hard to decide which ones to go on. The decision being made even harder by the time constraints of only having a week or two of vacation.

After going to Mexico for the past 7 years and going on different excursions, I would like to put my two cents in about one of them. This is probably one of the best times I, my girlfriend and two other couples that were with us have had.

The excursion was called Captain Hook. It is based on the movie series Pirates Of The Caribbean.

One thing you definitely want to do is make sure you get on the black pearl ship. This ship is the one that has a guy playing captain hook. He is very funny and entertaining. His first mate was a little person (midget) who was himself very funny. One of my friends at one point started yelling “the plane, the plain”, a little reference to the old tv series fantasy island. He had everyone on the ship laughing.

This is not only an entertaining night but also a good meal. The food is cooked over wood charcoal. The steaks are excellent. My friends say the seafood was great too. I do not eat sea food. They take people in groups and you go below deck to eat.

At one point the staff took all the kids to the front of the ship for a treasure and scavenger hunt. We had an 8 year old and a 3 year old with us. The kids had a blast doing this. While this was going on the adults played a few interesting games that involved some consumption of liquid refreshments.

There are more than one ship. Towards the end of the night, the two ships pull up alongside each other. Then one ship (the pirate staff) boards the other ship for a show of sword fighting with real swords. Then they switch as to give the people on both ships a show. The kids absolutely loved this.

The whole night was a blast and I would highly recommend you try it out if you can find the time. Adults as well as the children will have a great time.

The famous Menai Straits Bridge and road crossing to Anglesey was built by Thomas Telford, whose 250th anniversary was recently celebrated by the island. It is difficult to estimate the huge task facing Telford and his engineers as they planned what was a bold feat of engineering and a novel construction for its day, across what is a very tidal stretch of water. Turn back the history pages and you may see that what is the busy little town of Menai Bridge today, may have been a Roman village, which people reached by crossing in a small ferry across the Menai Straits where the gap between island and mainland is narrowest. To the north are the Lavan sands where Augustinian monks heading for Penmon Priory would struggle across at low tide, heading for Llanfaes, near Beaumaris.

How did Telford come to be commissioned to build this magnificent Menai Straits Bridge, what is an clearly an innovative example of nineteenth century bridge building? Greater pressure was placed for a closer link between Ireland and Britain after the Act of Union in 1800, and so the bridge to Anglesey was important for connection to Holyhead.

We only have to recall the story of the composer Handel trying to get over to Dublin from Holyhead in 1742 to realise how difficult travel was between England and Ireland. Not only was it difficult to cross the Snowdon Mountains but also the sea crossing to Anglesey and then the voyage across the Irish Sea, from Holyhead to Dublin, were big challenges.

A bridge crossing to Anglesey island was the key improvement in the London Dublin transport link, with a ferry from the port of Holyhead already in service. Building work began across the Menai Straits in 1819 after much political negotiation and pressure. The two huge towers which you see are a key feature of the bridge and they are made from limestone from the nearby island quarry. Sixteen wrought iron chain cables supported the bridge across the 175 metre gap, but they were replaced with steel cables before World War Two.

When you consider that a coach journey from London to Holyhead took around 36 hours before 1826, it shows how travel has been transformed since before the bridge was built. Following completion of the Menai Suspension Bridge the journey time was reduced to 27 hours. While a journey by car today from London to Holyhead can take around 6 to 7 hours, showing the benefits of Telford’s Menai Straits Bridge, the internal combustion engine and modern motorways.

Arriving on Anglesey witness some beautiful coastal and woodland scenes from this iconic bridge across Menai Straits, and nearby some well signposted coastal paths with fairly easy access. Cast your eyes northwards from the bridge and you will see Menai Bridge harbour with small yachts and motor craft moored nearby. These are strong tidal waters and you may see a yacht passing below the bridge, making its way for Beaumaris and then Puffin Island.

As you stand on the bridge looking south west, see how the strong Menai Straits currents flow towards the dual rail and road Britannia Bridge and on past Caernarfon Castle to the open sea. Off the Anglesey Coastline to the south is a small island, Ynys Gorad Goch, while on the shoreline a Statue of Admiral Nelson stands, and nearby is the former Indefatigable Sailing School. You can indulge your senses in all these experiences from the high vantage point of this enigmatic Menai Straits Bridge.

Disneyland Paris is a magical place that the whole family can enjoy together. It is one of those experiences that you will never forget and is wonderful to do whilst the children are still young (although my teenagers are still enthralled by Disney!). There are many options available when planning a trip but if you want to save some pennies it may be a better option to stay off site.

The Disney Hotels are lovely but unfortunately come at a price which for some makes the visit prohibitive. Also if you are happy to spend all your time in the park then the hotel is less important as you will only be sleeping in it! Whilst swimming pools etc are nice they are not the reason for your visit and you won’t want to spend valuable time in the pool rather than the parks.

The villages and towns surrounding Disneyland Paris have grown enormously in the last few years and can provide great alternatives at the fraction of the costs. Most provide shuttle services to the park and will allow you to explore the French countryside.

The Explorers hotel just outside the resort provides good value for money with rooms that can accommodate a family of up to 6 people (1 double 2 twin and bunk beds) whilst the rooms are slightly smaller that those in the Disney hotels they are more than adequate for a short stay of 3 – 4 days

We have also driven to Eurodisney and stayed in self catering accommodation in Marne la Vallee. This was great although you will have the added expense of paying for the car parks each day but this will be more than compensated by the fact that you can cook for yourself our eat out locally at much more realistic prices.

So when planning your visit to Disneyland Paris consider the option of staying offsite in the surrounding towns and villages and you maybe amazed at the quality and options available to you and considerably less cost than staying in one of the Disney Hotels.

Arriving in the City

Getting to Merida is generally not a problem considering it has an international airport within its city limits. There are buses that are available to take you from a number of cities in Mexico to Merida.

Once in Merida getting around is easy. There is a bus service within the city that is provided by four different service lines. The overall quality of service is comparable to the bus service in Guadalajara and other major Mexican cities, with many buses having climate control. Some of the buses, like the Uno, are luxurious buses with only 19, fully reclining, seats, individual Video monitors, blankets and pillows and, of course, a bathroom.

Taxi service is readily available in Merida and is operating 24/7. There is no train transit within Merida, but with buses, taxis and rental cars you will usually have no problem getting to the Gulf of Mexico (approx. 30 miles). Surprise! Expect to pay less than a third of the price you would normally pay in the USA when using a bus or a taxi. Tipping the taxi driver is always appreciated, but not a must.

The two main resort towns are Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. Most of the beaches in these areas have lifeguards on duty and warning flags posted where there is danger. Cleanliness is important and daily the staffs from the different hotels remove the garbage and sea weed from the beaches.

The International Airport is in Cancun along with the most luxurious hotels. Add that to the miles of beach and Cancun becomes the most popular resort in the Yucatan. Although the east side beaches draw the largest crowds, interestingly enough, the northern beaches are the best ones for swimmers because the ocean waves and winds are buffered by the Isla Mujeres (Women´s Island) just off the coast.

In the last 10 years or so Playa Del Carmen has grown and become a popular resort. It has all of the amenities Cancun has to offer, but without the rush or the high cost. Playa Del Carmen has miles and miles of the beautiful beaches of the Yucatan. Many people prefer these beaches because there are fewer tourists.

Smaller Secluded Beaches

If you don´t care for the well-known beaches because of the multitude of people and higher costs, there are a number of smaller, secluded beaches in the Yucatan.

• Isla Mujeres is a small island to the northeast of Cancun that can be reached by a short ferry ride. Many people go to Isla Mujeres just for the day, but there are hotels if you prefer to stay on the island. The beaches here are beautiful.

• Costa Maya is where those who want total seclusion go to enjoy the beach. Many of the beaches are swimmable. The advantage in this area is the abundance of wildlife and fauna.

• Puerta Aventura is an excellent place for diving. The main beach here is one of the most beautiful beaches of the Yucatan. There are restaurants and general services available.

• Akumal is a thriving place for divers, fishermen, beach lovers and boaters. Many of the beaches are natural in this area, but there are some sandy beaches that are safe for children. There are many sea turtles in this area and it is a great place to snorkel. The main beach is beautiful with lots of palm trees for cover.

Whether you choose the beach in a resort city like Cancun or one of the small secluded beaches, you will quickly discover why the beaches of the Yucatan are popular with people from all over the world.
