Exploring the Midlands by Coach

September 30th, 2009

So often when people travel around England, they talk about seeing the North or spending time in the South. Yet some of England’s best sights and scenery are to be found in the centre of the country, in the Midlands. And for people heading to the Midlands, it is worth planning ahead as there are a surprising amount of places to visit both in the city of Birmingham and in the landscape that surrounds it, known collectively, and affectionately as ‘the heart of England’.

If you’re planning to visit the Midlands, then the best way to get about is by coach (assuming there are a few of you in your party). Simply put, trains are too expensive, cars limit your numbers, and there’s far too much to see on foot. Birmingham for example, is a city that has undergone massive changes from its industrial past and has demolished the vast majority of the ugly architecture erected in the aftermath of World War 2. Where once it was a city packed with industry and manufacturing, now entertainment and culture fill the streets.

Birmingham is now a city packed with exciting and ultra-modern architecture, from the incredible Bull Ring Shopping Centre and the futuristic Selfridges department store to the famous Rotunda Tower. As well as this, Birmingham has built one of Europe’s largest and most unique shopping areas, all situated under the distinctive ‘Sky Plane’ Roof.  And if the hundreds of shops under one roof are not enough, then you can always move on to the city’s world famous Jewelry Quarter for a further bout of window-shopping.

Finally, (and perhaps most importantly) at the end of the day it is worth sampling what is fast becoming Birmingham’s own specialty dish, the Balti curry. For the very best Baltis, head out into the suburbs of Balsall Heath or Sparkhill. This is perhaps the best reason to have a coach at your beck and call around the city and region. From finding that perfect Balti to visiting the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, or from a visit to the National Exhibition Centre to a trip to watch the football at Villa Park, coach hire is the best way to sample the Midlands.

This becomes even more obvious when you travel further afield. Whether you want to spend a day of culture at Warwick Castle or wander around the desolate ruins of Kennilworth, or soak in the atmosphere of Shakespeare’s home at Stratford – upon – Avon; or whether you want to indulge yourself for the day at Cadbury World; whatever your mood there is something to match it in the Midlands. And if your party wants to see some of the best landscapes that England has to offer, why not get your coach driver to take you around the beautiful old villages and the Moorland tops and trails of the UK’s first national park, ‘The Peak District’, perhaps even stopping to try a section of the stunning 268 mile Penine Way which passes through the region.

Whether it’s the eclectic nightlife of its main city, or its moorlands and stone buildings, or even the caves and spas of Buxton and Castleton, the Midlands has some of the best sights on offer in Britain.
