Like the Seville area, the province of Cordoba is landlocked, though that should not be a reason for the more adventurous visitor to not visit either for both are fascinating. The area of Cordoba is split by the powerful Rio Guadalquivir on which lies the ancient town of Cordoba, founded by the Romans, though it flourished under the Moorish occupation and this is evident in the architecture found all over the city.

Built on a sharp bend of the brook which is crossed by the Roman bridge, the El Puente Romano, the town was a port. When the Moors were replaced by the Christians, the city’s beauty was left untouched and the Christian cathedral was built in the mosque, the Mezquita. The Mezquita dates back to the twelve century and symbolizes the power of the Moorish Islamic influence on this region of Andalucia. Built in 785AD by Abd al Rahman, the mosque has been added to over the generations by both Christian and Islamic faiths as they each controlled this area.

At the centre of Cordoba is the old Jewish quarter where little has changed in centuries, narrow streets and garden squares, tapas bars and eateries, an ideal area to explore and relax in the Spanish way. The bull fighting museum and the cool and refreshing fountains and gardens of the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos are definitely worth a visit both being open from Tues. to Sunday.

Move outside of the town into the area of Cordoba, and you will find it quite unoccupied, most of the population live in the city itself while the remainder are spread out in this giant unexploited area. Summers here are dry and hot, so that the best time of the year to go to is during the cooler spring and autumn months, where you’ll find towns that still hold on to their Spanish values, something that has just about all but disappeared from the Costas to the south.

For those of us who grew up during the “Cold War,” the word “Kremlin” has a particular connotation, not altogether warm and fuzzy. As far as I knew then, it was synonymous with the Soviet government, that cabal of mysterious leaders who, in Khrushchev’s words, would eventually “bury us.” Of course had I bothered, I could have discovered much more about the truth of the Kremlin, although its image probably would not have changed much in my imagination.

The word itself is more of a generic description than an actual name, somewhat the equivalent to the English word “citadel,” and as such is used to describe similar sites in other Russian cities such as Yaroslavl and Smolensk. It is the one in Moscow to which it almost invariably refers however, and it is that one that interests us now.

Recently I had the good fortune to visit Moscow and of course, could not have left without dedicating a good bit of time for a visit to the Kremlin. As I passed through the outer wall of the famous citadel, I couldn’t help but think that a few decades earlier I would have been immediately arrested and never seen again had I actually gotten this far. Times have changed, however, and the once forbidden Kremlin is now one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations. It’s not difficult at all to see why as soon as you pass through its mighty walls.

The first major attraction is found at the below street level entrance to the famous Kremlin Museum, and if not for the usually long line of visitors it could easily be missed and passed right by. What really draws the attention however, is the collection of cathedrals crowning the aptly named Cathedral Hill. There are three magnificent cathedrals there and two more churches to complete the set. If I had done my homework as a kid, I would have known that these religious structures not only existed in but dominated the Kremlin. But alas, I hadn’t done it so I was truly surprised to see such an imposing spiritual component of the heart of what President Reagan had called the “evil empire.”

If you can withstand the magnetic attraction of these beautiful buildings, it would be good to step over to the Kremlin Museum first and take advantage of the culture and history lessons it offers. Splendid examples of the enormous wealth of past empire are housed in its several sections and include items that you will likely never see outside its walls, ranging from the fur lined crowns of Russia’s first Tsars to the beautiful Faberge jeweled eggs of its last. You will leave the Museum with a much better sense of and feeling for the power and magnificence of Russia’s past empires and perhaps an insight into the psychology and character of today’s Russia.

After leaving the windowless galleries, stepping out into the fresh air to behold the architectural splendor of the Kremlin is a refreshing change. You’ll probably head immediately to the Archangel Michael Cathedral to enjoy the richly ornate interior. When I was there, a quintet of young Russian singers was performing excerpts from their current CD of traditional Orthodox spiritual songs. It was the perfect accompaniment to the visit, their wonderful voices reverberating throughout the holy space giving the visitor a unique sample of the spiritual music of the church. Of course, one of them was a typical Russian bass, the kind that seems to be unique to this country, and his rich, low tones vibrated right to my core. This kind of performance by musical groups is not unusual in Russia so you’re likely to encounter them in other cathedrals and churches throughout the Republic too. They are unabashedly promoting themselves and selling their CDs but in so doing are enriching everyone’s visit to these historic masterpieces of spiritual architecture.

Upon exiting this cathedral simply look up for a breath taking experience. You will see an array of golden onion domes, so unique to Russian orthodoxy, standing brightly against the sky. If there is anything that serves as a universally recognized icon of Russia, these domes must top the list. It’s not easy to resist gaping at them for several minutes, so go right ahead!

As you continue your tour of the Kremlin, you’ll pass the enormous Tsar Canon, an almost ridiculously ornate behemoth that was built on the command of Tsar Fyodor in 1586. It weighs nearly 38 metric tons and has a bore diameter of 890mm (35 inches)! It was intended to cast more than 800 kilos of stone shot on one firing so that stack of iron canon balls you’ll see in front of it are misleading. Story has it that they were made in St. Petersburg and given to Moscow as one more joke in the friendly rivalry between the two cities – they’re too big to fit in the canon. The Tsar Canon was never fired, by the way.

Right next to this monstrous gun is the largest bell in the world: the Tsar Bell. This 300-ton ringer was ordered built by the Empress Anna in 1734, but like the Tsar Canon its report was never heard. During a great fire in the Kremlin, water was thrown over the foundry where the bell was being forged causing a huge piece to crack off of it. A more amusing tale is how Peter the Great slammed the bell with his fist, breaking off the huge chunk. Peter was indeed great in stature but this is somewhat unlikely!

Through your journey you will likely notice the many towers placed along the Kremlin’s formidable wall. Several of these are architectural masterpieces in themselves, and all but two of the eighteen are named.

The official residence of the President of Russia is within the walls of the Kremlin, and is called the “Senate,” since in soviet days it did actually serve as the seat of the government. Its ornate interiors are well worth a visit if you can swing it. You may need an official pass from one of your highly placed pals to do so however.

Perhaps the one building that stands out most for its contrasting design is the State Kremlin Palace, built in 1959-61. It was originally called the Palace of Congresses and was used as the meeting place for the many congresses of the various republics. You may recognize its interior from your memories of the many photos and news clips showing its meetings back in the sixties and seventies. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union it is mainly used as a theater and public building.

There is still much more to see and visit in the Kremlin than what I’ve mentioned here, but my own experience limits me to the above highlights. The history that is contained within its massive walls encompasses the history of Russian empires and peoples and cannot be missed if one is to have a fuller understanding of this country. I do not normally suggest people go visit buildings in Vancouver because buildings in Vancouver are not aesthetically pleasing. However, the new Shangri La tower is the tallest building Vancouver, and one of the nicest as well. The Shangri La tower is 64 floors tall.

Canada Place

Canada Place is where the cruise ships dock in the summer, and where many conventions are held. You do not need to go inside Canada Place, but you must walk to the end of the Pier and look at the Pacific Ocean, the Mountains, and the views of downtown Vancouver. It is spectacular.

Chinatown

Every major city in the world has a Chinatown, and Vancouver’s Chinatown is one of the best in the world! There are many attractions in Chinatown, and I suggest you visit the Chinatown page on Vancouver Travel Guide. But the most amazing attraction in Chinatown is the Dr Sun Yat Sen Chinese Garden. Despite its indulgent overtones, Rio Carnival actually grew from Christian traditions and is held immediately before Lent, 40 days before Easter. Because of this, the precise date changes from year to year. In 2010, Rio Carnival will commence on February 13 and will end on February 17. This is the hottest point of the South American summer, giving Carnival its characteristically tropical, even fiery, atmosphere.

When should I book?

Rio Carnival sees tens of thousands of visitors arrive in the city, meaning that tickets to the Parade, Rio hotels, flights and other services get booked up months in advance. Hakone
It only takes about 2 hours train from Tokyo, Hakone is the most popular which famous of its many natural hot springs and country villas, health resorts and superb natural sightseeing spots. Couple of key places are Gora, Kowakidani and Lake Ashi that you can have a scenic view of Mt. Fuji with icy white topping. Nikko
Nikko is at north of Tokyo, it takes about 1.5 hours by high-speed Shinkansen train or just 2 hours with normal express train. It is the home to glorious elegant shrines and temples during Edo era, it is also the first summer retreat for foreign residents since Meiji era, as it is famous of its Lake Chuzenji, Ryuzu Falls, Kinugawa hot springs resort, Toshogun and beautiful natural environment.

Kyoto
30 minutes from Osaka Station! From Tokyo, it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes by Shinkansen. The splendor of autumn foliage and snowing white winter can be enjoyed at all of Kyoto temples and shrines, among them are Ryoanji, Tofukuji, Kigakuji and Gingakuji. The contrast of the colorful leaves in autumn with Ryoanji’s Zen style rock garden is enchanting; white snow view brings more calm Zen feeling. While the Tsutenkyo covered bridge spanning the valley within the temple grounds of Tofukuji is a superb prime viewing spot that will definitely snap up couple of nice photos.

Queenstown New Zealand is an amazing place. Not only is the scenery stunning, but Queenstown has been unofficially declared the “Adventure Capital” of New Zealand. If you like a bit of action in your holiday, then Queenstown is the place to go.

We thought that we might share three exciting Queenstown activities with you. These are things that we have tried and recommend.

No trip to Queenstown would be complete without a bungy jump. And Queenstown has a variety of options. Bungy was developed commercially by AJ Hackett, and was based on the “Land-diving” practiced by the natives of Pentecost Island in Vanuatu, where they jump from towers with vines around their legs. Thankfully, AJ Hackett has refined the process to the point where they can accurately adjust the length of the bungy cord to suit your exact weight. When we did our jump, it was from the old Kawarau Bridge, which passes over the Kawarau George, about 20 minutes out of Queenstown. The drop is 43 metres, and I can honestly say that it is the most exhilarating thing that I have ever done. If you can overcome your nerves, you have to try it. There are actually four other bungy options in Queenstown, all operated by AJ Hackett. The Nevis Bungy, the Nevis Arc, The Ledge Bungy, and The Ledge Sky Swing. The Nevis Bungy falls 134 metres and you jump from a cable car suspended over the gorge!

Queenstown also has several jet boat operators, and the best known are probably the Shotover Jet and the Kawarau Jet. The Shotover jet is probably the most recognized and operates on the Shotover River and through the Shotover Gorge. The Kawarau Jet operates on the Kawarau River and the Shotover River, and covers 43 kilometres on the hour long journey. During this time you will be amazed by how little water depth the boat requires. Sometimes as the driver heads towards what seems like a trickle of water you think “no, he’s not going to go through there!” but that’s exactly what he does. Amazing thrills.

The Shotover Jet is a different experience. The waters are deeper, but you have the added thrill of blasting through the Shotover Gorge between huge boulders and rock faces, which seem at times to be only a few inches away. I was amazed at the skill of the driver as he maneuvered the boat through the gorge, and yelled with excitement (I wasn’t the only one) as we raced through the gorge. It was in winter and it was freezing, but the heated hand rail was an unexpected find.

Do yourself a favour, and try a jet boat ride. Great fun.

The last adventure that I want to share is probably a little less full on, but is thrilling in it’s own way. The Skyline Gondola, which operates from premises within a short walk from the town centre, takes visitors on what is reputed to be the steepest lift in the Southern Hemisphere, to Bob’s Peak, some 450 metres above your starting point. The incline angle is about 37 degrees! The ride up (and down) is slow, but exciting, and you will be amazed by the views of Queenstown as they unfold below you. The trip up takes about 5-10 minutes. Once at the top, you will find a snack bar, restaurant, gift shop, and ample viewing decks from which to gaze at the amazing vista of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. If you feel like a lazy few hours, grab a coffee and stare at the view. However, if you want a bit more excitement, try the optional luge ride (highly recommended) where you take another chairlift even further up the mountain. From there you hop on your individual cart, and race down one of two concrete tracks, which snake their way 800 metres back to the base of the chair lift. My son and I have spent many an hour on the luge. It’s addictive. The gondola trip and the views combine to make this a must-do if you are in Queenstown.

And a final tip. Make sure that you have a high capacity memory card in your digital camera, because the photo opportunities in Queenstown are never ending.

When I last visited the Coral Castle in Homestead Florida, I came into the same complex that I always have. I saw that nothing had been changed. After all, it is hard to move 1100 tons of stone as if it is living room furniture. But, a friend of mine told me that there is an attraction there, a secret that very few people know about which adds to the mystery of Edward Leedskalnin and the Coral Castle.

When you first walk into the Coral Castle, you will be met with the 3 ton gate. It is a triangular piece of support all this perfectly balanced so that a small child using their pinky can push it around. To the left, you will see Ed’s reading room and also the north wall.

If you walk to the north wall, you will see a star shaped chair. This six pointed star is seen throughout the Coral Castle in many places. It is seen over what is purportedly Ed’s bath tub. It is seen in the Moon fountain that is near the 30 ton stone and the Crown. It is seen in the children’s area called the Grotto of the three Bears. And it is also seen at the top of the obelisk which stands over 30 feet high.

What is interesting is that Ed was asked if he was Jewish. This symbol resembled to some people the star David. Some people have said that it is the Latvian star and that is why Ed used it throughout the castle area. To guess, Edward replied that he was not Jewish and that the reason he used the six pointed star was because it is a geometric figure that is commonly found in nature.

In the work of Richard Hoagland, the six pointed star plays a major role in what is called hyper dimensional physics. This star is actually two tetrahedrons superimposed so that if there points touch on the outside of the sphere it creates a three-dimensional representation of the star that is seen throughout this coral masterpiece.

Although the 9 ton gate, which is arguably the most famous aspect of the Coral Castle, no longer moves as it once did because the ball bearings of the gear set that allowed it to rotate were damaged years ago, symbology within the Coral Castle remains intact and provides a clue to how this amazing structure was made.

Like the Mayan culture, a civilization that created megalithic structures, yet had no wheel, one wonders how Ed was able to blocks of coral that weighed in excess of 30 tons without the use of modern cranes or equipment. We may never know the mystery of the secret of this megalithic structure created in the state of Florida. This one secret, the six pointed star, may play a large role in how the Coral Castle was created over seventy years ago.

Last but certainly not least is the lovely Iridessa who the fairies know as Dess or Dessa. Iridessa is a neat freak, liking to have things in order which is common with light fairies. Her favorite treat is lemon meringue pie. She often worries about things but tries to stay positive and keep a good attitude. She looks bright and golden in her sun dress much like her favorite flower, the sunflower.

The Iridessa costume is golden yellow full gown. The costume comes with light fairy wings.
